PAUDEN Mourns the Loss of Brigadier General Oseni Omoh Braimah and Fellow Officers: A Stark Reminder of the Human Cost of Insecurity in Northeast Nigeria

The Pan African United Development Network (PAUDEN) extends its deepest condolences to the families of the fallen, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the people of Borno State following the tragic incidents of April 9, 2026. In coordinated overnight assaults attributed to elements of Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on military positions in Benisheikh (Kaga Local Government Area), Ngamdu, and Pulka (Gwoza Local Government Area), Brigadier General Oseni Omoh Braimah, Brigade Commander of the 29 Task Force Brigade under Operation Hadin Kai, along with at least 17 other soldiers, paid the ultimate price in defense of Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

This loss comes mere months after the November 2025 killing of Brigadier General Musa Uba and echoes earlier 2026 incidents in which lieutenant colonels and other senior field officers were killed in ambushes and base attacks across Mobbar, Konduga, and Kukawa Local Government Areas. These events, reported from Nigeria’s northeastern theater and often centered around Maiduguri, underscore a disturbing pattern: the deliberate targeting of experienced military leadership in the ongoing insurgency.

At PAUDEN, we view these sacrifices not merely as military casualties but as profound setbacks to regional stability and human development. Northeast Nigeria remains a critical corridor in the Lake Chad Basin, where insecurity disrupts agriculture, education, trade, and the free movement of people—pillars of the sustainable development we champion across Africa.

We commend the Nigerian military’s swift response and the reported neutralization of numerous attackers. Yet, we urge all stakeholders—national governments, regional bodies such as the African Union and ECOWAS, and international partners—to intensify collaborative intelligence-sharing, border security, and community resilience programs. True victory over extremism demands more than tactical operations; it requires addressing the underlying drivers of vulnerability: youth unemployment, climate-induced resource scarcity, and ideological exploitation.

PAUDEN reaffirms its commitment to Pan-African solidarity. We stand with the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the brave men and women of its armed forces. May the memory of Brigadier General Braimah, his fallen comrades, and all officers who have served with distinction inspire a renewed, unified continental effort to build resilient, prosperous communities where terrorism finds no fertile ground.

We call upon our member networks, partner organizations, and African youth to support grassroots initiatives in education, vocational training, and economic empowerment in conflict-affected zones. Together, through development-led peacebuilding, we can honor these sacrifices and secure a safer future for the next generation.
